What to Check Before Buying a Stone Slab
A stone slab is one of the few things in a project you cannot quietly fix later. Paint gets repainted, joinery gets re-cut, a light fitting gets swapped. But once a slab has been templated, cut, polished on the edges and bonded to a substrate, whatever you approved at the yard is what the client lives with for the next twenty years. That makes the half hour you spend inspecting slabs before you sign the single highest-value half hour in the whole material process.
This guide is the checklist we work through when Veltora prepares Iranian travertine, granite, marble and crystal for projects in Oman. It is deliberately practical: not a geology lesson, but the questions to ask, the things to look at, and the things to get in writing. It works whether you are selecting from our stock, walking a yard in Muscat, or standing in front of a container that has just cleared the port. And it is written for the people who actually stand in front of the stone — architects confirming a finish, interior designers matching a palette, contractors receiving a delivery, and villa or hotel developers signing off a large order.
Start with the paperwork, not the polish
Almost every slab dispute we have ever seen traces back to something that was never written down. Before you look at the stone at all, settle what you are actually being offered.
Confirm the commercial name and the block reference
Natural stone names are commercial, not scientific. Half a dozen quarries in different countries may sell something called Ivory, Beige or Silver Travertine, and they will not look alike. What you want is the specific name plus a block or lot reference that ties the slabs in front of you to a single extraction. Without that reference, a reorder six weeks later is a lottery.
Ask, too, what the stone actually is. A supplier who says a stone is marble when it behaves like a soft limestone, or calls a quartzite a granite, is either careless or hoping you will not notice. Ask which batch the slabs come from
Blocks cut from the same quarry a year apart can differ noticeably in background tone and vein density. If your project needs more stone than one block yields — a lobby, a stair core, a run of bathrooms — insist that all of it comes from the same batch and is reserved at the same time. Buying half now and half later is the most common way a beautiful floor ends up with a visible tonal seam down the middle.
Get the batch reference on the quotation, the invoice and the packing list. Three documents saying the same thing is what turns a promise into something you can enforce.
Check the real dimensions, not the nominal size
Slabs are quoted in nominal sizes, and the real ones are always a little different. Edges are rarely perfectly square, corners get chipped in handling, and the first and last slabs off a block are often narrower than the middle of the run.
Measure the usable rectangle — the largest clean area you can actually cut a piece from — rather than the outer dimension. On a kitchen island or a reception desk, a slab that measures generously on paper but has a soft, crumbling edge on one long side may not yield the single uninterrupted piece your drawing assumes. Take your longest cut length to the yard and physically check that it fits inside the sound area of the slab.
If the design depends on a seamless run, count the slabs against your cutting layout before you approve anything. It is far cheaper to add a slab at the yard than to discover a shortfall after templating.
Measure the actual thickness
Slab thickness is usually nominal too. A slab sold as 2 cm may measure a little under, and one sold as 3 cm may vary across its own length. Bring a caliper or a steel rule and check at several points along each edge.
Thickness matters for more than pricing. It determines whether a countertop needs a plywood substrate or can carry itself, how much overhang you can cantilever at a breakfast bar, whether a stair tread meets the loading you need, and how the fixing system for a cladding panel has to be designed. A 2 cm slab used where the detail assumed 3 cm will change the reveal on every edge in the room.
Also check that thickness is consistent across the pack. Mixed thicknesses in a single delivery force the fabricator to shim, and shimming under stone is how you get rocking tiles and cracked grout lines.
Read the surface: cracks, fissures and what is normal
This is where inexperienced buyers either panic about nothing or wave through something serious. The distinction is worth learning.
Fissures are natural; cracks are not
A fissure is a natural feature formed when the stone did — a tight, healed separation along a mineral boundary. It usually follows the direction of the veining, it is often only visible at certain angles, and it does not open up. Many marbles and quartzites have them, and they are not a defect.
A crack is mechanical damage that happened after the stone was formed, usually during extraction, sawing or handling. It tends to cut across the grain rather than follow it, it may be visible on both faces, and it will keep moving. A crack in a slab you are about to cut into a countertop is a reason to reject the slab, not to negotiate a discount.
Two quick field tests
Run a fingernail across the line. A fissure is generally flush and your nail glides over it; a crack catches. Then have the slab lifted or tilted and look at it with light coming through from behind, or shine a torch along the face at a shallow angle. Backlighting shows separations that a flat, overhead-lit yard completely hides. On lighter stones this one test finds more problems than everything else combined.
Finally, tap gently along the slab with a knuckle or a small piece of wood. Sound stone rings; a dull, flat note over a particular area suggests a hidden separation or a heavy resin repair underneath.
Turn the slab over
Most buyers never look at the back of a slab, which is a shame, because the back is where the honest information is.
Mesh and resin backing
Fibreglass mesh bonded to the reverse with resin is completely standard on many marbles, travertines and crystal stones. It holds the slab together through transport and fabrication, and on a fragile stone it is a sign of a careful processor rather than a hidden fault. What you want to know is how much of it there is and why.
Light, even mesh across the whole back is routine. Thick localised patches of resin, or mesh doubled over one area, tell you that section was weak and needed rescuing. Ask what is under it. A slab held together by its backing will behave very differently once your fabricator cuts a sink hole through the middle of it.
Filler in travertine
Travertine forms with natural voids, and filling them is normal practice, not a defect. Check that the filler is well colour-matched, that it sits flush rather than shrunken below the surface, and that large voids have been filled properly rather than skinned over. Unfilled or poorly filled holes on a floor collect dirt and are difficult to correct after installation. Judge colour and pattern in the right light
Stone yards are lit by whatever is overhead, and slabs are usually stood vertically in racks. Your floor will be horizontal, lit from the side by daylight, and seen from standing height. Those are very different viewing conditions, and stone that looks calm in a rack can look busy underfoot.
Wherever possible, look at the slab wet as well as dry. Wetting approximates how a polished or sealed surface will read, and it exposes tonal variation that a dusty dry face conceals. Carry a sample of the adjoining materials — the joinery veneer, the tile, the paint chip — and hold them against the slab in daylight rather than trusting memory or a phone screen.
Then step back. At two metres you see the pattern the room will actually read. Concentrations of dark veining that look dramatic on a single slab can become visually heavy across a whole floor, and a stone that reads as gentle movement close up can wash out to flat beige from across a lobby.
Confirm the finish matches your specification
The same stone in three finishes behaves like three different materials. Polished shows every mark and can be genuinely slippery when wet. Honed hides more, feels softer and is usually the safer choice around water. Leathered and brushed finishes add texture, disguise wear and are the most forgiving underfoot outdoors.
Do not accept a finish by name alone — finishing standards vary between processors, and one yard’s honed is another’s semi-polished. Look at the actual slab, in the actual finish, before you approve. Our comparison of polished and leathered finishes explains where each one earns its place.
Check consistency across the pack, too. A polished slab that has been sanded back locally to remove a scratch will show as a dull patch under raking light, and it will never fully match once installed.
Agree the wastage allowance before you approve the quantity
Nobody uses one hundred per cent of a slab. Sink and hob cut-outs, edge trims, offcuts at the ends of runs and the pieces lost to a defect all come out of what you bought. A realistic allowance for most jobs sits somewhere between ten and twenty per cent above the net measured area, and it rises when the stone has strong directional veining that has to be matched, when the layout has many small or awkward pieces, or when you want spare material held back for future repairs.
Decide who carries that allowance before you order. If the quotation is for net installed area and the wastage is your problem, you will be buying a second time. Holding back one or two spare slabs from the same batch is cheap insurance: a cracked tread or a damaged countertop three years later is almost impossible to match from new stock. Sequencing, book-matching and slab numbering
Slabs cut from the same block are sequential: slab one and slab two were neighbours inside the block and their veining continues from one to the next. That continuity is what makes book-matched feature walls and continuous vein runs across an island possible — and it is destroyed the moment slabs are stacked out of order.
If your design depends on sequence, say so explicitly and check that the slabs are numbered on the edge. Then photograph them in order, with the numbers legible, before they are packed. Ask that the packing list records the sequence and that the crate is loaded so the order survives.
For book-matching specifically, confirm that consecutive slabs have been cut and finished as a pair. Two slabs from the same block are not automatically a book-match; they have to be processed with that intent, and the pairing needs to be identified before the stone leaves the yard. Inspect edges, corners and packing
Most slab damage happens in transit, not in the quarry. Look along all four edges for chips and for the fine, feathered spalling that indicates a knock. Small edge chips within the trim allowance are cosmetic; a chip that reaches into the usable area is not.
Check the corners, which take the worst of any handling, and check that the slabs are separated by soft packing rather than stacked face to face. Polished faces in direct contact with each other will scuff, and in a humid container, trapped moisture between two faces can leave staining that has to be ground out.
If you are receiving a container rather than selecting at a yard, photograph the crates before they are opened, then photograph each slab as it comes out. Damage claims are won on documentation and almost never on argument after the fact.
What should be agreed in writing
Before money moves, the paperwork should record the commercial name and stone type, the batch or block reference, the quantity in square metres and slab count, the nominal and tolerated thickness, the finish, the edge treatment, whether slabs are sequenced and numbered, the wastage assumption, packing method, delivery point and lead time.
Two further points are worth naming explicitly. First, who inspects and where — approval at the yard, on arrival at the port, or on site — because that determines who carries the risk in between. Second, what counts as grounds for rejection, so that a cracked slab is dealt with by an agreed rule rather than a negotiation.
The one-page slab checklist
- Commercial name, stone type and block or batch reference confirmed in writing
- Enough material from a single batch for the whole scope, plus spares held back
- Usable rectangle measured against your longest required cut
- Thickness checked with a caliper at several points, and consistent across the pack
- Face inspected in raking light and, where possible, backlit
- Cracks distinguished from natural fissures; cracked slabs rejected, not discounted
- Reverse face checked for the extent and location of mesh and resin
- Travertine filler colour-matched, flush and complete
- Colour and pattern judged wet, in daylight, against adjoining materials
- Finish verified on the actual slab, consistent across the pack
- Wastage allowance agreed and its cost allocated
- Sequence numbered, photographed and recorded on the packing list
- Edges, corners and packing inspected and documented before loading
Mistakes we see most often in Oman
Three come up repeatedly. The first is ordering exactly the measured area with no allowance, which almost guarantees a second order at a different tone. The second is approving a slab from a photograph. Stone is a three-dimensional material with depth and translucency, and no image reproduces how a crystal or a translucent marble reads with light behind it — if you cannot attend, send someone who can, or ask for video taken in raking and transmitted light.
The third is specifying a high-polish finish for an exposed outdoor terrace or a pool surround. Polished stone in full Gulf sun is hot underfoot and slick when wet, and the finish itself weathers unevenly outdoors. Textured finishes exist precisely for this, and the decision costs nothing at specification stage and a great deal afterwards.
A fourth, quieter one: not planning the route. A three-metre slab has to reach its final position through real doors, lifts and stairwells. Confirm access before you buy the piece that will not turn the corner.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fissure in a marble slab a defect?
No. A fissure is a natural feature of the stone, formed when the marble formed, and it is usually tight and stable. A crack is later mechanical damage that runs across the grain and continues to move. Fissures are accepted in natural stone; cracks in a slab about to be fabricated are grounds for rejection.
Why is there mesh glued to the back of my slab?
Fibreglass mesh set in resin is standard reinforcement on many marbles, travertines and crystal stones. It supports the slab through transport and fabrication and is a sign of careful processing. Light, even mesh is routine; heavy localised patches indicate a weak area, so ask what is underneath before approving.
How much extra stone should I order?
Plan on roughly ten to twenty per cent above the net measured area for cut-outs, offcuts and edge losses, and more where veining must be matched or the layout has many small pieces. Keep one or two spare slabs from the same batch — matching a repair from new stock years later is rarely possible.
Can I rely on photographs when buying slabs remotely?
Only as a shortlist. Photographs flatten depth, misrepresent colour and hide fissures completely. If you cannot inspect in person, ask for video of each numbered slab shot in raking light and, for translucent stones, with light behind, plus close-ups of the reverse face and all four edges.
Does slab thickness really change the design?
Yes. Thickness governs how far a countertop can overhang unsupported, whether a substrate is needed, how a cladding panel is fixed, and the reveal on every visible edge.
