This is standard for large-format slabs, double-height reception walls and any installation where a bonded-only method would be over-stressed. It also allows a small cavity behind the stone, which some designers use for concealed lighting.

Hybrid approach

Many premium interior walls combine both: mechanical support at intervals for safety, plus full adhesive contact for a flat, rattle-free face. A good contractor will tell you which method they are using and why — if they cannot, that is a red flag.

Step 3 — Setting out and dry-laying

Before any adhesive is mixed, an experienced crew “dry-lays” the stone — arranging the pieces on the floor to plan the layout. This is where the artistry lives. Natural stone varies from piece to piece, so slabs are sequenced for colour flow, and book-matched panels are mirrored so the veins open like butterfly wings across the wall. Cuts are planned to fall at the edges rather than leaving a thin sliver in a prominent spot, and the centre line is set so the pattern looks intentional.

Set-out also decides joint width. Natural stone is typically installed with tight, thin joints to keep the eye on the material rather than the grout. Battens or a ledger board are fixed to guarantee the first course is dead level, because every course above inherits the errors of the one below.

Step 4 — Fixing, grouting and sealing

With the layout locked in, the stone is fixed from the bottom up, each piece pressed and tapped into full contact and checked for level and flatness as work proceeds. Spacers or a laser line keep the joints consistent. On tall walls the crew works in lifts, letting lower courses gain strength before loading more weight above.

Sealing sequence depends on the stone. Porous, light or polished stones — most marble and travertine — are usually sealed before grouting so pigment from the grout cannot stain the surface, then grouted, cleaned and sealed again. Dense stones such as many granite varieties need less protection but still benefit from a penetrating sealer in the joints. Grout colour is chosen deliberately: a matched grout makes the wall read as one surface, while a contrasting grout emphasises each piece.

Finishes change the installation
