Best Stone for High-Traffic Areas
A floor in a hotel lobby, a mall corridor or the entrance hall of a large villa does not wear out evenly. It wears in lines — the diagonal people cut from the door to the lift, the metre in front of a reception desk, the turn at the foot of a staircase. Walk into a ten-year-old building and you can read its circulation pattern in the floor.
That is the real problem. The stone is not being asked to look good on handover day; it is being asked to look acceptable after several million footfalls have dragged grit across it.
The short answer
For continuous public footfall — lobbies, corridors, entrances, retail floors — specify granite in a honed or leathered finish. Where budget and design allow, quartzite is equally hard and often more visually interesting, though supply is narrower and slabs vary more.
For moderate residential traffic — a family entrance hall, an upper landing, a private corridor — marble and travertine are both viable, provided you accept a patina and plan maintenance accordingly. What actually counts as “high traffic”
The phrase gets used loosely. In practice there are three bands, and they demand different answers:
- Light to moderate: bedrooms, upper landings, low-use offices. Most stones perform acceptably.
- Heavy: villa entrance halls, apartment lobbies, restaurants, boutique retail. Wear shows within a few years if the stone is soft.
- Very heavy: hotel lobbies, mall concourses, transport floors, hospital corridors. Only the hardest stones hold a finish, and detailing matters as much as material.
Two things escalate a floor between bands faster than headcount: grit entering the building and wheeled loads. Sand tracked in from outside is an abrasive; trolleys and cleaning machines concentrate load onto small contact patches. A modest lobby in a dusty coastal location can wear harder than a busier floor inland.
The four properties that decide how a stone floor wears
Colour, veining and slab size dominate the selection meeting. None of them affect durability. Four measurable properties do.
Abrasion resistance
The most relevant number for a traffic floor, and the one most often missing from a specification. Measured under ASTM C1353 as an abrasion hardness index (Ha). ASTM C615 requires granite to reach 25 Ha; ASTM C503 for marble and ASTM C1527 for travertine both set the bar at 10 Ha. That gap is why granite dominates commercial flooring — the standard itself expects far more of it.
Surface hardness
Mohs hardness describes resistance to scratching rather than gradual abrasion, but the two correlate. Granite sits at roughly 6–7 and quartzite at about 7. Marble is far softer at around 3–5, travertine similar. Quartz sand — the main abrasive walked into any building — sits at 7. Sand scratches marble easily, granite barely.
Water absorption
A porous floor stains, and stains are the failure everyone notices first. ASTM C615 caps granite at 0.40% water absorption; ASTM C503 caps marble at 0.20%. Travertine is the outlier — a porous stone whose performance depends almost entirely on how well its voids are filled.
Slip resistance
A floor that wears well but turns slippery when wet has failed at something more important than appearance. ANSI A326.3 sets a minimum wet dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) of 0.42 for level interior floors walked on when wet. Treat it as a minimum, not a target — entrances, poolside routes and food-service areas deserve a margin above it.
Granite: the benchmark for heavy footfall
Granite is an igneous rock built mainly from quartz and feldspar, interlocked in a dense crystalline structure. That structure is why it resists abrasion: there is no soft matrix for grit to cut into, and the mineral being walked on is about as hard as the mineral scratching it.
On a busy floor the consequences are straightforward. Granite holds its finish in wear paths long after a softer stone has gone dull, resists the acids in spilled drinks and cleaning products — which is why it survives food-service settings where marble etches — and tolerates the rotary machines used to clean large buildings.
The trade-off is aesthetic. Granite reads as granular or linear rather than veined, so it will not deliver a dramatic book-matched look. Darker granites also show dust in a polished finish — one more reason honed surfaces win in public areas. Quartzite: harder still, but check what you are buying
Quartzite is metamorphosed sandstone, recrystallised until the quartz grains fuse. At around 7 on the Mohs scale it is the hardest stone commonly used in buildings, and superb underfoot.
The caution is commercial rather than geological. “Quartzite” is applied loosely in the trade, and some material sold under the name is a softer dolomitic marble that behaves nothing like it on a lobby floor. Marble in high-traffic areas: possible, with conditions
Marble is used in some of the busiest and most admired buildings in the world, so blanket advice to avoid it is too crude. What is true is that marble in a public area changes — and the project has to want that change rather than merely tolerate it.
Two mechanisms are at work. Abrasion: at 3–5 on the Mohs scale, marble is cut by quartz sand underfoot, so a polished surface turns matte along the wear paths while staying glossy at the room’s edges. And etching: marble is calcium carbonate, so anything acidic — citrus, wine, cola, many descaling cleaners — leaves a shallow dull mark no sealer prevents, because sealers resist staining, not chemical attack.
If marble is the design intent, the fixes are practical. Specify honed rather than polished, so the surface is already matte and wear creates no contrast. Choose denser, tighter marbles. Keep it away from food service and pool surrounds. And put real matting at every entrance so sand never reaches it. Travertine: fill quality decides everything
Travertine forms in mineral springs, and the bubbles trapped as it precipitates give it its voids. Those voids are the whole question. Filled well — with a matching resin or cement compound, under pressure, at the factory — travertine gives a warm matte floor that hides dust far better than a dark polished stone.
Filled poorly, the fill pops out under traffic. Each lost plug becomes a small crater that collects grit and darkens, and re-filling in situ never quite matches. Used sensibly — villa entrances, courtyards, moderate-use corridors, pool surrounds where its warmth underfoot is a real advantage — travertine performs well. In a mall concourse it will not.
Finish matters as much as the stone
Two floors cut from the same block age completely differently depending on the surface finish — in high-traffic work, often a more consequential decision than the stone itself.
- Polished maximises colour and depth, and is the worst choice for a busy floor. Every scratch in the gloss is visible, wear paths appear as dull tracks against a shiny background, and it is the most slippery option when wet.
- Honed is the workhorse. Ground flat but left matte, so abrasion creates no contrast — the floor wears without looking worn. Wet grip is markedly better than polished.
- Leathered or brushed adds a texture that hides dust and light scratching, with the best wet grip of the three — the natural choice for entrances and indoor-outdoor transitions.

The details that fail before the stone does
In most disappointing stone floors, the stone is not what failed. The recurring culprits:
- Thickness. Twenty millimetres is standard for interior floors; heavy loading and wheeled traffic usually justify thicker material or full bedding rather than spot fixing.
- Bedding. Voids under a tile concentrate load and crack it. Full-bed installation matters far more here than in a bedroom.
- Entrance matting. The cheapest durability measure available. Several metres at each entrance removes the grit that does most of the abrasive work.
- Transitions and thresholds. Edges take the most punishment: arrises chip, thresholds loosen, and a failed junction reads as a failed floor.
- Movement joints. Tight joints look better but leave less tolerance; on a large public floor they are not optional.
Maintenance that keeps a traffic floor looking new
Traffic floors need a routine, not a rescue. Dust-mop frequently — removing grit before it is walked in is the single most effective measure available. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, since general-purpose floor products etch calcareous stone and dull sealers. And re-seal on schedule rather than when marks appear: sealing is preventive.
