Almost every stone project begins with the same question: which stone should we actually use? Four names come up more than any others — marble, granite, travertine and quartzite. They look different, they behave very differently, and choosing badly is expensive to undo once slabs are cut and fixed.

This guide compares the four on the things that decide a real project: how hard they are, how much water and staining they absorb, how they react to acids, how they age, and where each one genuinely belongs in a building. How each stone forms — and why it decides everything

Granite is an igneous rock. It formed as molten material cooled slowly deep in the earth’s crust, crystallising into interlocking grains of quartz, feldspar and mica. Those silicate minerals are hard and chemically stable, which is why granite resists scratching, heat and acids.

Quartzite is metamorphic. It began as sandstone and was recrystallised under heat and pressure until the quartz grains fused. The result is a stone that is essentially compacted quartz — the hardest of the four, and equally indifferent to acids.

Marble is also metamorphic, but it started as limestone. Heat and pressure recrystallised calcium carbonate into the dense, translucent stone with the veining marble is known for. Calcium carbonate is soft and reacts with acid — the trade-off behind marble’s beauty.

Travertine is sedimentary. It formed where mineral-rich spring water deposited calcium carbonate in layers, trapping gas bubbles that leave travertine’s characteristic pitted texture. It shares marble’s chemistry but is softer and considerably more porous.

Marble: elegance with a softer surface

Marble is the stone people picture when they imagine a luxurious interior. Its appeal is hard to imitate: depth, translucency and veining that runs through the slab rather than sitting on the surface. On a feature wall, a staircase or a reception counter, nothing else reads quite the same way.

The trade-offs are real. Marble sits at roughly 3 to 5 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it scratches more readily than granite. Because it is calcium carbonate, acidic liquids — lemon, vinegar, wine, some cleaning products — will etch it, leaving dull marks that are chemical damage rather than stains. Sealing reduces staining but does not prevent etching.

Granite: the durability benchmark

Granite is the practical choice across most of a building. At roughly 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching well, it is dense and low in porosity, it tolerates heat, and — being silicate rather than carbonate — it does not etch when something acidic is spilled on it.

Visually granite is different from marble. Instead of flowing veins it usually shows a crystalline, speckled or granular pattern, though darker and more dramatic granites exist. It is the default for kitchen worktops, high-traffic floors, stair treads, external cladding and any surface expected to survive decades with minimal attention. Travertine: warmth, texture and value

Travertine occupies a useful middle ground. It is softer than granite — around 4 to 5 on the Mohs scale — but its warm, matte, earthy palette suits large areas in a way that heavily veined stone often does not. Big travertine floors and facades read as calm rather than busy.

Its defining characteristic is porosity. Travertine contains natural voids, and how those are handled changes the material completely. Filled and honed travertine gives a smooth, even surface suitable for interior floors; unfilled or brushed travertine keeps its texture and grip, which is why it is a standard choice around pools and on terraces.

Quartzite: the hardest of the four

Quartzite is the performance answer. At around 7 on the Mohs scale it is harder than granite, very low in porosity, heat-tolerant and acid-resistant. Many quartzites also carry soft, marble-like veining, which is why they are often specified by clients who want marble’s appearance with granite’s resilience.

Two cautions are worth knowing. First, some material sold as quartzite is in fact softer dolomitic stone, so verified identification matters. Second — and more commonly confused — quartzite is not the same as quartz: quartzite is a natural quarried stone, while quartz surfacing is an engineered product made from crushed mineral bound in resin.

The three properties that actually decide your choice
